Three months later I figure it out

Archaeology class taught me today about the Pater Noster Church on Mount of Olives, something I visited with Anna a while ago but didn't exactly know the importance of. With my grandparents' help, I at least knew that Pater Noster meant "our father," (hey, Spanish and Hebrew don't leave a lot of room in my head for Latin) but I still didn't know the importance attached to the site.

According to my professor, Constantine built the original church in the early Byzantine days, on the site of the cave where Jesus gave the creed to the disciples. That's why all the panels around there have the Lord's Prayer written in a million different languages. Orginally it was also the site of Christ's Ascension, but another church was later built claiming that honor (it's now part of a mosque) and then another Russian Orthodox group built the belltower that is today called the Church of the Ascension, along with the second church. The Pater Noster no longer claims to be the site.

I know that wasn't bothering anyone but me, but I'm glad to have it worked out. My midterm for that class wasn't as good as I'd hoped, but better than I was pessimistically expecting. I got an 84, which is one point below an A- here, but my mind still think in American university standards, and translates it to a low B.

The Constantine-built church is the one that we saw a TV special on awhile ago. It was very interesting - apparently a couple were doing some excavation, which was very difficult to get permission for because of the antiquity of the site & all the various religious interests. I think they did say that Constantine chose the site because of the Ascension - I wish I could remember the details. There was also a lot about the chapels that were built over each other on the central site, and then the big dome that was built over the whole thing. The couple was trying to determine the age of the various chapel structures that they were unearthing. Hopefully it will be on again someday & you can see it.

We also saw Indiana Jones & the ....... whatever the last one was, with the Petra scenes. It was fun to see them going right through that amazing canyon that you took pictures in, and of course the Treasury facade was featured. Very beautiful colors on the rocks the way they filmed it.

See ya' - Mom
